The 2011 Bakbakan  will be an 11-
stag affair with a whooping P40 million in guaranteed
cash prize. Bakbakan organizers are expecting that
the coming Bakbakan will break its own record in
terms of participation. Last year some 3,500 entries
participated in the 10-stag event with only two champions.
This year’s format will be 3-4-4, meaning 3-
stag elims; 4-stag semis; and 4-stag finals. As usual
the eliminations and semi finals shall be held in numerous venues nationwide.
Bakbakan usually starts early October and
ends early December.
Last year Ralph Daigo’s twin entries—GRND
Richelle-2 and GRND Richelle-1 -- scored 10 and 9.5
points respectively to register an unprecedented
champion-runner up finish in the country’s most prestigious stag event.
In 2009 Bakbakan he already served notice of
his stags potential by scoring 9 points out of the possible ten. Last year he made it. Had it not for a draw
in the last fight of GRND Richelle 1, Daigo would
have scored a double championship that would have
made his achievement the much harder to duplicate.
The 45-year-old Daigo from the Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Association (RGBA) fielded awesome
buliks in securing a place in stag fighting history. The
champion stags were crosses out of Gengen Arayata’s
famous bulik line.
The other champion last year was Gov. Jayjay
Suarez of Quezon who, sporting the banner Bondoc
Peninsula  also completed a 10-stag sweep, handing
Quezon Cockers and Breeders Association (QCBA) a
share of the honors.
The bakbakan is organized by the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB)
headed by President Ricoy Palmares. It is heralded as
the grandest derby on earth. NFGB which started
with nine founding affiliate associations, now has 32
member GBAs. Bakbakan was first held in 2001.
The founding GBAs were:
1. NGBA –Negros Gamefowl Breedders Association
2. GFBAN—Gamefowl Breeders Association of
Negros
3. PAGBA –Panay Gamefowl Breeders association
4. MIGBA –Mindanao Gamfowl Breeders association
5. CEGBA - Cebu Gamefowl Breeders Association
6. CGBCA - Cebu Gamefowl Breeders & Cockers
Association
7. NEGBA - Nueva Ecija Gamefowl Breeders Association
8. CVGBA - Cagayan Valley Gamefowl Breedes Association
9. UNIGBA - United Ilocandia Gamefowl Breeders
Association
The 1st Bakbakan was  a 7-stag derby and was
held in Iloilo City, with only 190 entries
