A few days before Christmas, sabungeros who were constant followers of the sabong communities on Facebook were shaken by a post coming from the much admired breeder of the Ormoc gold bloodline, Bernie Tacoy, no less. The post was supported by graphic portraying the widow of Emoy Gorgonia, Mayet, as a swindler.
Not a few were taken aback. Ms. Gorgonia, Allyson Yu on Facebook, is now the host of the popular Tukaan TV show which her late husband founded and nurtured into becoming the leading game fowl TV show at the time of his death. Ms. Yu is a celebrity. She has hordes of fans following her on the show. Her elegant looks definitely worked for Tukaan.
She a swindler? No way, at least at first glance.
The accuser, on the other hand, is not just anybody. Bernie Tacoy is Bernie Tacoy, likewise admired and respected. And, he said Mayet and one James Morales swindled him of chickens and money. If Bernie said so, then it must be true. He is a respected breeder and cocker as such he ought to be always true to his words and careful with words.
Yet, he said Allyson is a swindler. And, she denied it. Therefore, only one of them must be right, the other must be wrong? Or is there a possibility that, by some twist, both of them are right?
Let’s get to that later. Let's deal with the present. The situation now is pending resolution of whether she’s a swindler or not, the fact is her reputation has been damaged.
Comments on FB have been divided between those who condemned her and those who supported her. The anti-Mayet in the FB sabong community did not necessarily outnumber the pro- Mayet, but they were more intense and would post their passionate comments at every opportunity they saw; whereas, the Mayet believers were more spontaneous in their reactions. They only posted comments whenever they found it necessary, in reaction to a particular thread or topic, or, to a particular post at the time.
The catch here is that public opinion might be formed out of arguments that are vehement, rather than from views that are prevalent. If such is the case, then Ms. Yu might be judged guilty before the bar of public opinion.
I believe, there is but a thin line that divides seeking redress for grievance and conducting malicious smear campaign. One may cite the former to effect the latter; much like, invoking justice to exact vengeance.
Lest, I be misunderstood, I am neither judging the accused here nor attributing ill-motives to the accuser. After all, I can see that Bernie has valid gripes to ventilate, and that one James Morales has a lot of explaining to do. Besides, Bernie’s motive, according to him, was not to defame Mayet but to warn others for fear it could happen to them.
The only question left to be resolved: was Mayet an unwitting enticement or a willing attractive lure. Either way, with her stature and looks, and as she said, her trusting self she could really get things going the way of a professional con-man. Whether she's aware of this or not, the fact is she could disarm men into lowering their guard.
It is just a pity that two idols and icons of the sabong community might end up destroying each other, just because a filthy scum managed to squeeze in between them. If only Mr. Bernie and Ms. Mayet can instead join forces in going after this scum’s throat.
